Extended FAQ & Preparation Guide

The Practice of Silence: A Journey into Stillness

General Course Questions

Is this only for people who already practice silence?
No. This journey is especially designed for those who are new to silence—or who have tried it and found it difficult. The course meets you where you are and gently builds your capacity for quiet, one step at a time.

What if I get anxious or overwhelmed in silence?
This is common, and nothing to be ashamed of. Silence can bring up what’s been buried beneath the noise. That’s why we integrate somatic practices and nervous system wisdom—so you can learn to stay present with discomfort without forcing anything. We move slowly and gently.

Is this a Christian course?
Yes. The content is deeply rooted in Scripture and shaped by contemplative Christian tradition. We also honor the body as a sacred place of encounter with God, and integrate somatic awareness as part of spiritual formation.

Do I need to be part of a church to join?
No. This course is open to anyone—whether you’re rooted in a church community or exploring faith in a quieter way. Many participants are pastors, spiritual seekers, or those in seasons of deconstruction or spiritual exhaustion.

Format + Access

How is the course delivered?
The course is self-paced and available online. You’ll receive access to guided video teachings, reflection prompts, somatic practices, and Scripture-based meditations you can move through at your own rhythm.

Can I access the course on my own time?
Yes. Once enrolled, you can begin anytime and revisit the material as often as needed.

Is there a schedule or timeline?
You’ll be invited to move gradually—from short moments of stillness to longer periods of silence. You’ll also be notified about retreat dates as they approach, so you can participate live or prepare for personal reflection at home.

Retreat Questions

Do I have to attend the retreats to participate in the course?
No. The online course stands on its own. The retreats are optional deepening experiences—designed for those who feel called to enter communal silence.

Where are the in-person retreats held?
Retreats are hosted in Southwest Virginia. Specific locations and travel guidance will be shared as we make the arrangements.

What is the Half-Day Online Retreat like?
This retreat (November 2025) is fully guided online. You’ll receive a rhythm for the day, including live or pre-recorded prompts, gentle embodiment practices, and extended periods of shared silence.

What should I bring to a silent retreat?

  • Comfortable, non-restrictive clothing

  • A journal and pen

  • A blanket, cushion, or anything that helps you settle

  • Water and light snacks (we’ll offer more detailed guidance for longer retreats)

  • An open heart—no pressure, no performance

What if I have sensory or trauma-related needs?
We are committed to creating gentle, trauma-informed space. Each retreat includes options for stepping away, somatic regulation, and personal pacing. You are never forced to "push through" discomfort.

Real-Life Integration

Can I participate even if my life is loud and full—kids, caregiving, work stress?
Yes. Stillness is not always about external quiet. You’ll learn how to carry inner silence into daily life—even when the outside world is noisy. There’s no perfect condition for this practice. The course is built for real people, with real lives.

What if I fall behind or can’t keep up?
You can never fall behind. This isn’t about mastering silence—it’s about meeting God and yourself where you are. All content is self-paced and always accessible.

How do I prepare to enter silence?

  • Start small: pause for 30 seconds once a day

  • Let go of expectations—there’s no “right way” to be still

  • Greet discomfort with curiosity, not shame

  • Treat silence as relationship, not performance

  • Use breath, posture, and Scripture to settle into sacred awareness

Giving + Accessibility

What does donation-based mean?
This course and retreat series is offered on a sliding-scale donation basis, you are free to give what you can. No one is turned away.
